Brian the Bad Movie Guy: Horror DVDs for November 17th
November 17, 2009
by Brian Morton
Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, and, like everyone, my mind is on horror. What? Your mind isn't? Well, it should be, after all, it's a time of scares and frights, don't we fight over who gets to 'carve' the turkey? And didn't the pilgrims spend most of their time wiping out the Indians? So, what time could mean horror and frights more than Thanksgiving?! And, in honor of this terrifying holiday, let's take a look at what hits DVD shelves today, shall we?
In RITUALS from Code Red, a group of doctors head out on a camping trip to the middle of nowhere on a Canadian mountain. Well, it's lucky they're doctors, because someone is following them, and I do believe that he's a dangerous psycho, and those guys usually carry some kind of weapon. So, it's a vacation and a challenge to your first aid skills!
Looking for something a bit more 'holiday specific'? Well, Broad Daylight Pictures is helping us celebrate THANKSKILLING today. This horror/comedy finds a group of college kids running "a fowl" of a turkey who's been possessed by an ancient Indian curse. Now, the kids are on the run from the maniac bird and it's anyone's guess who'll end up with stuffing shoved up them!
Speaking of trips, in Magnolia Home Entertainment's THE CANYON, a honeymooning couple gets lost in the Grand Canyon and what was a nice honeymoon, now turns into a struggle to survive! Gee, I hope there's not turkey's out there!
Dark Sky Films is throwing a VAMPIRE PARTY today. This French horror/comedy is about a trio of kids who score invitations to a VIP party at a remote castle. Sounds like fun! Until you find out that the party is being thrown by vampires and, if you attend, you'll have to fight your way out of the party. I went to a party like this once...only it wasn't vampires, it was my relatives...but they're very similar.
Video Music Inc. is helping us with PENANCE today. A young mother who's desperate for case becomes a stripper only to have her worst nightmares come true. What's the worst nightmare of a stripper? I guess that's those weird guys in sweat pants who don't tip!
Video Music Inc. isn't letting up! They're still at it with BASEMENT JACK! This is the tale of Karen, a girl who managed to survive a seven day killing spree perpetrated by a teenager known as Basement Jack. Now, years later, the courts have decided that Jack didn't get a fair trial and he's been released. Now, when people begin to die again, Karen knows that it's Jack and it's up to her to hunt him down and kill him to stop the carnage. This is one movie that will make you think twice the next time you head into the basement.
Vicious Circle Films wants you to meet HANGER today. No, hanger's not a thing, it's a person. It seems that years ago, a prostitute was given an abortion by her pimp...using a hanger. The child was discarded into a dumpster, left for dead and mocking named Hanger. But Hanger didn't die, and now he's back for revenge against any lowlife on the streets...and my guess is that there's a bunch of lowlifes out there! Watch your back's lowlifes, Hangers gonna perform a retroactive abortion on you!
If you like the Twilight series (or hate it), then you'll probably enjoy Tempe Video's TAINTLIGHT today. This parody is about Stella, a young girl in love with the beautifully coifed vampire Edgar. But, when a Michael Jackson loving werewolf, Jack, comes between them a battle ensues. Enter into the mix a group of 'real' vampires, led by Razor McBleed and you've got yourself a full fledged parody that will have you bleeding with laughter!
In CALL OF THE HUNTER from R Squared Films, three teenagers go out camping in 1962, only to have one of them meet a tragic end. Now, 40 years later, the sole survivor of the trip is returning to the scene with a documentary crew, but when the crew begins to be killed off one by one, everyone wonders if the original accident was an accident at all, or if there's something evil in the forest! This is just another reason why I'm known as 'The Great IN-doorsman'!
Did you miss the whole 'grindhouse' era? Well, Shriek Show is going to take us all back for a RIOT ON 42ND STREET today. Set on 42nd street in the 80s, this is the story of a grindhouse owner who has to fight the underworld to keep his theatre from becoming just another sleazy porn shop. But, when his staff begin turning up dead, he has to turn a bit violent to get a little revenge. This sounds like a pretty cool salute to the Deuce of the bygone era.
Well, with that fine memory of theatres past, I'll say my goodbyes and head off to begin sharpening the blades for the upcoming 'carvings'. If this wasn't quite enough for you...and good for you by the way, if that's the case...then you can always find me pulling the wishbone of the indie scene over at Rogue Cinema.com and if that still doesn't make you sick, then you can find me every Friday, pouring gravy on a DVD at my own site, Bad Movie Guy.com. And, let's all agree to unbutton out pants and meet back here next Tuesday for some more horror DVDs.
