Brian the Bad Movie Guy: Horror DVDs for November 3rd
November 03, 2009
by Brian Morton
November is here and soon, the slaughter of the turkeys will begin! That's right, October may have Halloween, the scariest time of year for us humans, but November has Thanksgiving, the most terrifying time of year for turkeys...imagine, having your friends pulled from your community, plucked, skinned and then having bread crumbs stuffed up their ass before being baked! Scary, right? Well, since it's a scary time of year, why not pile on with some cool horror DVDs? So, here's what hits shelves starting today!
First up, for you giant monster fans, it's SAND SERPENTS from Rhi Entertainment. A small group of Marines is stranded in a remote desert in Afghanistan...but it's not the Taliban that's worrying them, it's the giant worms under the sand that want to eat them! And you thought terrorists were scary!
Warner Home Video is unleashing a torrent of DVDs today, all of them 'classic's and all of them on Keepsake DVD...here's what they're giving us. First, it's the 80s remake of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, if you like your horror mixed with some romance and singing...then you're in for a treat. If you like your horror a bit more classic, then you're going to want HOUSE OF WAX, this wonderful Vincent Price movie is still in 2D here, so let's all lobby for a 3D release, shall we? Next is THEM!, the 'ant-made-giant-by-the-atomic-bomb' movie from the 50s. If you love those SyFy Channel giant bug movies, then take a look at how it all got started. If your taste runs more toward the serial killer flick, then you'll want to grab up COPYCAT starring Sigourney Weaver as a housebound psychiatrist being stalked by Harry Connick Jr. And, anyone can tell you, being stalked by Harry Connick Jr. is nearly as frightening as listening to him sing! And, to keep the ball rolling, they're also putting DREAMCATCHER on shelves. Set in the snowy forests of Maine, this tells the tale of a group of friends who's trip is interrupted by an alien invasion. And, if you can't get enough of the giant monster movies, EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS also gets the Keepsake treatment today. Now, if watching David Arquette fight giant spiders doesn't get you excited...then check your pulse, my friend. And, to cap it all off, Warner Home Video is giving the Keepsake treatment to EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC too. This mess of a movie stars Richard Burton as a priest who's following Linda Blair after her initial encounter with Satan. Called the 'reverse gold standard for sequels', this one might be worth a peek!
So, let's leave the Keepsake editions behind us and move forward, shall we? Lionsgate is introducing us to the NIGHT WATCHER today. As Angela deals with the suicide of her mother, she gets a package that contains a tape of deal ol' mom's last days. It turns out that she was being stalks and watched...and that her death might not have been a suicide at all. Now, as other people being to commit 'suicide', Angela has to find out who's behind it all. Can someone cue the old 'Somebody's Watching Me' song??
Lionsgate wants us to confront the BEAST WITHIN today, the story of a man who's on his way to enjoy a nice party with some friends. And, everything seems fine, until a man with the bird-flu bursts into the party...and he's not alone! Now the party-goers are forced to battle off the infected hordes...sort of like Night Of The Living Dead, only with bird-flu.
In DARK MIRROR from MPI Home Video, a mom moves her family into a strange old house filled with weird glass and mirrors, only to begin seeing disturbing reflections in the glass! Has she discovered an alternate reality? And, will this homicidal evil be unleashed on the world? This is exactly the reason I don't have any mirrors in my house...that and the fact that even I don't find myself attractive!
Pathfinder Home Entertainment wants to take us all to the BLOODY BEACH today. When eight members of an internet club all decide to meet up for some fun, they soon find themselves stalked and killed by a killer called Sandmanz! This teen slasher flick should be pretty cool...after all, who doesn't like seeing teenagers killed in brutal ways?
In VCI Entertainment's THE GHOST OF GREVILLE LODGE, a teenager, who's been an orphan all his life, discovers an Uncle who invites him to live with him at Greville Lodge. But, after exploring the creepy lodge, he wakes up one night, in front of a sealed door, that's suddenly opened! Through the door, all the secrets of the lodge will be revealed! Who wants to be there's a ghost in that room? And, he's the one who probably locked the door to have a bit of privacy...after all, there's some damned orphan roaming around the lodge!
Sub Rosa Studios is giving us a GRINDHOUSE DOUBLE FEATURE: THE FOREST HAS EYES today! The first movie is THE DEVIL OF BLUE MOUNTAIN, the tale of a maniac who drags two women into the blue ridge mountains to have his sadistic way with them! In the second movie, DARK WOODS, a man has bought a summer camp to refurbish, but he doesn't know that it was the scene of horrible murders 20 years ago. Rundown camp? Check. Multiple counselors? Check. Mysterious killer, hacking them all to death. Check-er-ino!
In CONTAGIO from This Is Not A Dream Productions, a couple heads out on a dream vacation. But, when a satellite crashes near their campsite and releases a toxic cloud, who wants to bet that some kind of zombie is about to be born?
Amadeus Pictures is bringing about the DEATH OF EVIL today, the story of a Native American who having bad dreams. When he falls in love with a dark woman, he soon realizes that she's under a form of brainwashing...and, now that she's pregnant with his child, he has to confront the evil and destroy it before his child is born into an evil world! Kids, they're always wanting food, attention and demanding that you destroy evil for them!
And, finally, from Apprehensive Films, we have GAPPA: MONSTER FROM A PREHISTORIC PLANET: THE CINEMA INSOMNIA EDITION! If you're not familiar with Cinema Insomnia, it's a old fashioned horror host show, starring Mr. Lobo. And in this DVD, you'll not only get the terrible Gappa, you'll get Mr. Lobo doing wrap arounds, retro commercials and just a ton of fun. If you're a fan of Cinema Insomnia, then this is a must have, if you haven't heard of Mr. Lobo, you're in for a treat!
Well, that should get your November started off right, something old, something new, something borrowed and something with an axe in its head...I think that's the saying. So, let's all agree to meet back here next Tuesday, when we'll be one week closer to Turkey day, and if you can't wait that long, I'm always picking the bones of the indie film scene over at Rogue Cinema.com and, when I'm done there, I can always be found with my pants undone and feeling nappy over at Bad Movie Guy.com, unless I'm looking for something scary, then I'm right here at FearZone.com!
