Brian the Bad Movie Guy: Horror DVDs for November 24th!
November 24, 2009
by Brian Morton
EDITOR'S NOTE: I've never met Brian Morton, "the Bad Movie Guy," but he's interviewed me a couple of times for the excellent indie horror webzine Rogue Cinema, and he's been with Fear Zone from the beginning. Man, we've tried this DVD column every which way but loose: as a video series, as a podcast, as a monthly column, and finally, for quite a while now, as a weekly column. I've loved working with Brian, not the least because he sends me a month's worth of columns at a shot, he always remembers to include images for me to choose from, and he includes his HTML codes! Anyway, he's got a great sense of humor, as this column proves, and I'm kind of sorry to see that we're leaving the weekly DVD previews to other columnists who don't know how to laugh at themselves and these releases. Amateurs! It's been great, Brian.
It's the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and we're all looking forward to that wonderful family time. But, when that's over, and your cheeks have been pinched until they're raw and you've had so much turkey that you want to puke, you'll be looking for a little alone time...and there's nothing that will drive the chuckle-headed relative out of the room like a great horror DVD. So, my friends, here's what hits DVD shelves today, that you can utilize on Thursday to get yourself a bit of privacy!
First up, how about a not-so-scary appetizer. It's THE MONSTER SQUAD on blu-ray from Lionsgate. Yes, Dracula, the Wolfman, Frankenstein and the Gillman are all present and accounted for in this 80s classic. Sit back with a lovely snack and enjoy!
Moving on to the next course, something a bit more aggressive, it's the anime inspired, BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE from Mange Video, the story of an undercover vampire hunter on an air base. When two of her classmates turn out to be vampires in disguise, my guess is that the blood will flow like cranberry sauce!
In THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW from Liberation Entertainment, some sorority chicks who are days away from graduation throw one last party. But, little do the sisters know that a maniac is lurking in the house and their little party is about to trigger a murderous rampage! This 80s classic is a definite must see, before you check out the remake that currently in theatres.
If that's not enough 80s cheese for you, then you'll be glad to see that Lionsgate is putting the original 1984 version of MY BLOODY VALENTINE on blu-ray today! That's right, the original angry miner is back and this time it's all in HD!
How about a little fun after that holiday gorging? Well, Rhi Entertainment has some of that with CARNY today. Lou Diamond Phillips stars as a local sheriff who's forced to hunt down a carnival monster who escapes his cage. What could be more fun than some carnage at the carnival?
How about something a bit more....Asian? Well, Vivendi Entertainment is tickling our palates today with the VENGEANCE TRILOGY. This 7 disc box set has the three vengeance themed movies from Park Chan Wook. You'll get SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE, OLDBOY and SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE. All complete and uncut here and, literally, hour of extras for each movie. If you're a fan of any (or all) of these movies, then this is a 'must have' set...or something to put on your Christmas list.
In THE WITCHES HAMMER from MTI Home Video, Rebecca is brought back from the brink of death as a secret agent...who's also a vampire! That's right, and her mission is to kill vampires. Now, she joins two priests to hunt down a master vampire and destroy him before he can perform a ceremony that will unleash Hell on Earth! I'm just wondering how much seniority you have to have to become a 'master' vampire....I guess it's a pretty strong vampire union they got there.
What about something a bit more classic? Well, Mya Communication is bringing us the Spanish movie, HUNCHBACK OF THE MORGUE starring Paul Naschy. This mash-up of the Hunchback and Frankenstein finds Naschy playing a hunchback who works in a morgue. When the only woman who was ever kind to him dies, he freaks out and steals her body and takes it to a doctor who promises to reanimate her...if he gets more body parts. Who wants to be that the girl's gonna be turned into a monster?
In THE CURSE OF THE CRYING WOMAN from Synapse Films, the woods are being haunted. If you go into the woods at night, you'll most likely be killed. But who's doing the killing? Could it be the old lady that everyone can hear crying in the night? And, if you can't believe that a seemingly harmless old lady is capable of violence, I'll introduce you to my mother!
Looking from something 'different'? Well, Breaking Glass Pictures has it for you with SLAUGHTERED VOMIT DOLLS. The first in the Vomit Gore Trilogy from Lucifer Valentine. This is the story of a young runaway whose abuse at the hands of a priest is so bad that she swears an allegiance to Satan. But, when even Satan seems to turn his back on her things get even more depraved...if that's possible. I've seen one of this trilogy, and it's not for the weak stomached...Trust Me!!
Redemption USA wants to introduce us to THE FIEND today. When a religious sect called the Brethren take control of a widows estate, they don't count on her unstable son signing on board. And, when the son's mental state crumbles even more, no woman is save from his religious fervor...or murderous rage! Who would guess that religion could be used for violence?!?!
And, finally, how about something very weird for dessert? Well, weird is what we always get from Tokyo Shock, and I'm sure that DEVILMAN is no exception. When scientist accidentally opens the gate to hell, his teenaged son becomes the host to a demon calling itself Devilman. Now, as the teenager fights to maintain his humanity, the rest of the planet is planning a war against the demons, even if it means destroying any humans in the area! I think they need a better lock on those gates to Hell; people are always accidentally opening them.
Well, that should keep your horror palate happy, and keep the room empty for the rest of the holiday. Next week, we begin December and the look forward to Christmas...and a batch of evil Santa's, I'm sure. But, if you find that you need a little something else, then you can always help me pick the bones of the indie scene over at Rogue Cinema.com, and, you can join me in a comfy chair for a little l-tryptophane nap at Bad Movie Guy.com. And, let's all be aware that if there's horror to be found, then it's always right here at FearZone.com!
