Brian the Bad Movie Guy: Horror DVDs for Tuesday, Sept. 15th
September 15, 2009
by Brian Morton
Well, September keeps moving on; here we are half way through it already! As the old folk say, any day above ground is a good one, and the best way to make any day better is with a horror DVD! So, let's dig out of our graves, and see what we can pop into our DVD players this week!
Universal is releasing the grand-daddy of all the werewolf movies this week, that's right, it's AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, in a 'Full Moon Edition', in both standard and blu-ray. I'm not sure what a 'full moon edition' is, but does it matter? Between John Landis' masterful direction and Rick Baker's cutting edge effects, this movie made me wet my pants in 1981 and I'll be putting on my depends to catch it again on blu-ray!
But wait, there's more! That's right, Universal is also releasing a 'Screwhead Edition' of ARMY OF DARKNESS today. This is also in standard and blu-ray, so anyone can join the army! If you've never caught this third in the Evil Dead series, then run, don't walk to the DVD store and grab this movie! And remember, shop smart, shop s mart!
Finally, after all the rest of the series have hit DVD, Universal is also letting us have PHANTASM II today! This sequel has Mike talking Reggie into helping him hunt down and kill the Tall Man. And, I'm guessing that those cool spheres will be aplenty!
Remember the Masters Of Horror series on Showtime? Well, true horror fans will remember that, after it went the way of the dodo, NBC picked it up, changed its name to Fear Itself and then proceeded to kill it! Well, Lionsgate is releasing FEAR ITSELF: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON, which, ironically, is the only season. Fans of these great short films should rejoice, because finally we'll get to see all these great mini-movies from some of horrors biggest names!
Probably in anticipation of the Benicio Del Toro version, that was scheduled to hit theatres this fall, but was moved to 2010, Universal is releasing the original 1941 THE WOLFMAN, under their Universal Legacy Series label. If you've never seen Lon Chaney Jr. doing his original transformation, then you should grab this up and see what had all of just children of the 60s and 70s quivering in fear!
Does it seem like Universal is putting out a ton of horror movies for the fall? Well, Paramount isn't going to be outdone! They're releasing not one, but two Jason movies in Deluxe Editions today! First there's FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD, that has Jason killing teenagers, as usual, but one of them has psychic powers! Then, there's FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN, which finds Jason bored with life in the camp and on a lovely vacation in the Big Apple...no...wait...I stand corrected, he's going to kill teenagers again. Sorry.
Looking for something a little bit different? Then Anchor Bay has something for you, it's GRACE. This is the story of a young pregnant woman who, with her husband, is in a terrible car accident. He's killed and she's seriously injured. In fact, her baby is pronounced dead, in uetero! But, she decides to have it anyway, and when it's born its hungry...but not for mother's milk...this baby needs blood! This sounds dark and depraved and disturbing...just the way I like them!!!
Anyone who would enjoy seeing Elisha Dushku attacked by hillbillies in ultra-clear quality should thank 20th Century Fox today for releasing WRONG TURN on blu-ray! That's right, the hot tom boy versus the inbred in the best quality yet! I know you're going to buy this...so don't be ashamed!
When two guys wander into an abandoned hospital, only to find a girl tied down and helpless, things get dark and weird fast in DEAD GIRL from Dark Sky Films. This is supposed to be another movie that's dark and twisted, which means, I just added another movie to my collection!
You're saying, these are all good movies, but I don't see any giant monsters fighting? What about those? Well, Universal hears your pleas my friends and are releasing KING KONG VS. GODZILLA today! Yes, the 1962 'classic' has the two giant monsters (who appear to be men in rubber suits) battling in Japan. Considered one of the lesser kaiju movies, this is still a hoot!
Fans of traveling and hitting the bathroom will be pleased to see that Warner Home Video is releasing the REST STOP COLLECTION today. Featuring both movies, Rest Stop: Dead Ahead, the first movie that finds a young couple terrorized at the titular potty station and you'll get Rest Stop: Don't Look Back, which finds the relatives of the original characters stopping for a bit of a break themselves, only to be terrorized by the faceless trucker and his band of minions! Either movie will have you holding your bladder mile after mile!
And, if that's not enough double feature action for you, then R Squared Films will make you happy with the SILO KILLER 1&2 DVD today. When a group of college kids head out on a camping trip, they don't know that they're sharing the woods with a deranged killer who plans on killing them all and stacking their bodies in an abandoned silo that's nearby! And, I'm assuming that in Part 2, it's more of the same. This should be low budget horror at its best!
New Line Home Video was feeling left out, so they're releasing the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE DOUBLE FEATURE today. In one box, you'll get the original remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre from 2003 and you'll get the more inferior prequel Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Beginning from 2008. Now, being a fan of TCM in any version, I'm sure I'll break and buy this double feature DVD, because, after all, chainsaw massacres are like pizza, there's not really any bad pizza!
Fans of Wes Craven will want to kiss Universal Home Video today as they release the WES CRAVEN COLLECTION. That's right; you'll get three Craven movies in one package. There's THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW, which finds Bill Pullman drawn into the voodoo scene. Then there's SHOCKER, Craven's prisoner who's transformed into a killer by electricity movie and finally there's THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS, the under-rated movie about a couple who enjoy capturing children and keeping them locked in the basement until they die! Not the three best Craven movies, but three fine movies none-the-less.
Not to leave anyone out, Universal is also releasing the JOHN CARPENTER: MASTER OF FEAR COLLECTION today, featuring four Carpenter movies. You'll get the classic THE THING, the fantastic PRINCE OF DARKNESS, the underwhelming VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED and, one of my personal favorites, PRINCE OF DARKNESS. Fans of Carpenter and fans of Craven can plan to meet at the DVD shelf and have some fine arguments!
Fans of the House On Haunted Hill will be celebrating today as Warner Home Video releases the HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL DOUBLE FEATURE. You'll get the original House, and you'll get the Return To The House On Haunted Hill, both in one box. So, if you weren't haunted enough, here's twice the haunting in one package for you!
Fans of haunted houses will be delighted to hear that Virgil Films And Entertainment is releasing the indie haunted house movie, SPIRITS AMONG US today. This is the tale of a young couple who buy a fix-er upper, only to discover that the tools they need aren't in the tool box, but in the exorcists kit! Should be spooky fun!
Warner Home Video has also decided that you can never have enough double features, so they're also putting THE LOST BOYS COLLECTON on shelves today. Featuring the original The Lost Boys and the sequel The Lost Boys The Tribe, this should provide a mild antidote to those crappy Twilight movies!
New Line Home Video is jumping on the double feature band wagon with THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT DOUBLE FEATURE, featuring the first two in the time traveling series and THE LAWNMOWER MAN DOUBLE FEATURE, featuring the only two in that series...just in case you really need any of these movies.
Warner Home Video won't be outdone, now they're releasing the IT'S ALIVE COLLECTION, featuring the first two movies starring everyone's favorite monster baby!
Fans of more realistic horror should enjoy MPI Home Video's PVC-1, the tale of a woman who has a bomb strapped around her neck. If her family can't come up with the ransom within 84 minutes, she'll be blown up! This movie is done in real time and sounds pretty tense. I once strapped a bomb around my neck, but no one would pay the ransom!
Fans of killer plants will be pleased to see that Dreamworks Video is releasing an Unrated version of THE RUINS today. I'm not sure what's added here, but I'm sure that it's plenty of planty killing!
Cheney Films Company and Superteam Films UK are teaming to bring us CALL ME A PSYCHO this week. This British horror/comedy has two bumbling detectives chasing a psycho who's escaped from a mental institution. This should be bloody good fun!
Cinema Epoch is bringing us NO THROUGH ROAD today. The story of a photographer whose home is invaded by a woman who's running from someone. Who's she running from? I guess we're all going to find out!
Damn, that's a lot of movies! I guess we're all going to be staying up late to get all of those in before next week, but I know that you're going to do your best to get them all in. So, until next week, when we'll all meet back here to do this all again, remember that I'm always filling my brain full of indie films over at Rogue Cinema.com and I'm always lying exhausted on the floor over at Bad Movie Guy.com and I come around here every week to keep you up to date on what's new on horror DVD, after all, where else would you go for all things horror?
