Brian the Bad Movie Guy: Horror DVDs for Tuesday, September 29th
September 29, 2009
by Brian Morton
It's the last Tuesday in September, and things are heating up around here. That's right, as we enter October; everyone seems to want to jump on the horror bandwagon! Where are they all in April, when I'm looking for some cool horror movies??? Well, I guess I can stock up now, and save some for the spring. Who am I kidding? I'll buy them, watch them and then bitch when there's no fresh horror later...like I always do! Anyway, my complaining aside, here's what hits horror DVD starting today!
Fans of Blu-Ray will be in hog heaven today, beginning with the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE remake hitting blu ray today, thanks to New Line Home Video. That's right; it's Leatherface, the Sheriff and Jessica Beil all in high definition! Well, one of those things might be better in high def, but I'm not sure about the other two!
But don't think I'm done with Blu-Ray, nope; Severin Films is getting into the mix too, with HARDWARE on blu-ray. When a post-apocalyptic scavenger brings home a cyborg skull to his artist girlfriend, it isn't long before the skull is rebuilding its body and taking apart others! Think Terminator meets Friday The 13th.
Not quite done with Blu-Ray yet, thanks to New Line Home Video, SNAKES ON A PLANE gets the blu-ray treatment today. That's right, it's Samuel L. Jackson fighting those mother-fuckin' snakes on that mother-fuckin' plane one more time, and this time it's all in high def!
And last, but certainly not the Blu-Ray-Least is THE NEW YORK RIPPER from Blue Underground. It's Lucio Fulci's classic about a killer who loves to butcher hot chicks and taunt police! Plus it's a very cool look at the pre-Giuliani New York with all the sleaze still in full effect. And, here it's not only in high definition, but it's totally uncut and uncensored!
So, you're thinking to yourself, it looks like our old friend Brian has gone over to the Blu-Ray dark side. Well, you'd be wrong! I'm all about the regular DVD's too! So, here's what's not hitting blu-ray, but still hitting hard!
Synapse Films is helping those of us with short attention spans by releasing 42ND STREET FORVER 5: ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE EDITION. The Alamo Drafthouse is one of the last true grindhouses left working in the U.S., so it's appropriate that the 42nd Street series comes here with a ton of cool, classic cult and exploitation trailers. Trailers from movies like, Chatterbox, Redneck County, Moonrunners, Pinocchio's Birthday Party, Terror In The Wax Museum, Danish Love Acts and too many more to mention are here. This is a must have for fans of those cool hard to find trailer...of which I am one!
In anticipation of the big screen remake, Synapse Films is releasing THE STEPFATHER 2 to DVD today. This sequel to the 1987 classic finds Terry O. Quinn back and still looking for that perfect family. And, if you're not perfect, be prepared for Daddy to become unhinged and probably slaughter the whole fam! While it's not quite as good as the original, this is still a pretty good 80s horror movie, and well worth checking out.
Troma is putting THE HANGING WOMAN on shelves today. This wonderful Spanish cult film features Paul Haschy as a gravedigger in a 19th Century Scottish town that unearths a crypt filled with the living dead! These 70s European movies are ones that were rarely seen here in the states and are very cool to catch up on.
In THE SHORTCUT from Anchor Bay, there's a path through the woods that no one in town takes, because of the creepy old guy who lives back there. But, when a group of high school seniors decide to take the shortcut and see what the psycho may be hiding, they may not make it to graduation! I think this is a house that I've looked at, but didn't buy it, because of all the damned kids that came along...and the garden just wasn't big enough to bury them all!
A&E Home Video is releasing a boxed set of their series Paranormal State today, PARANORMAL STATE: DEMONIC INVESTIGATIONS finds the members of the Penn State Paranormal Research Society looking into strange phenomenon all over the country. Fans of the series will definitely want to grab a copy of this!
Redemption USA is releasing the 1972 British movie, BURKE AND HARE today. This 'based on a true story' movie tells the tale of two men who lived near a 19th century medical school. What the school needs are fresh cadavers, which can only come legally from executed prisoners. So, when the school is running low, they decide to buy cadavers from anyone, no questions asked, and our two heroes become professional grave robbers! Grave robbing as a profession? Where does one train for that?
The Spanish thriller FERMAT'S ROOM is hitting shelves from MPI Home Video today. The story of four famous mathematicians who are lured to the remote home of Fermat. Once they're there, they find themselves locked in and forced to solve a series of logic puzzles, and if they don't the walls will begin closing on them. Can the geniuses solve the problems before they're turned into mathematician paste? We'll have to grab our calculators and find out.
R Squared Films is giving us something more for our money today with THE HORROR VAULT 1 & 2 today. Part 1 have 9 stories of "sex, violence and horror", which are all things that we all love. While Part 2 picks up with part 1 left off with 9 tales packed with "scares, sex and mayhem", which are the other three things we love. So, this should be worth a look!
Well Go USA invites us to travel with them to FLESH, TX today. When a mother and daughter stop for gas in Flesh, Texas, soon the daughter is missing. Now, the mother is on a search for her and she's convinced that the town has something to do with the disappearance. If she heads up to the Barley house, that sits on the edge of town, she's liable to find her, but what else she finds there might be something that no human is ever supposed to see. They say that Flesh, Texas has a population of 666, so I guess they're just keeping the urban growth down.
In FARMHOUSE from Monarch Video, a couple heads to the country to make a new start of it. They buy a wine vineyard and set about forgetting the secrets of their past, but secrets have a way of cropping up when you least want them to. So, now they're dealing with their secrets and the weird inhabitants of the vineyard too! Sounds like someone didn't do the proper research before buying!
Andrea is a normal Goth college chick in BLOODWINE from R Squared Films. When her best friend comes back into her life, Andrea thinks that things will finally start getting better. But, when another woman, Carmilla, also show up with a birthday gift, Andrea is forced to make a terrible choice...and I don't think it's about which friend to keep!
Redemption USA is giving us DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS, a 1948 'classic' about a woman who lures men to her and kills them. And, since she's the assistant to the village priest, no one suspects her of murder. No one, except an inquisitive towns-lady, who may find herself in trouble. Since this is from 1948, you can expect a taught drama with little to no gore or sexuality...but it's still a classic.
Fans of UFOs will be thrilled that Mill Creek Entertainment is releasing the ALIEN FEAR COLLECTION today, this 4 movie line up features, THE ABSENCE OF LIGHT; WILLOW'S WAY; 6 ANGELS and EXTERMINATOR CITY. So, beam on up and grab a copy of this!
Mya Communications wants us to have DINNER WITH A VAMPIRE today. This is the story of a vampire who's unearthed after thousands of years, only to become a world famous horror director (we all know that horror directors are blood-suckers, right?!), now, he's invited his latest cast to his home for dinner, only to reveal that he's bored with his endless existence and wants them to kill him. They have until dawn, or I believe that the tables will be turned.
Fans of the undead will want to grab the DAMNATION MEDIA PACK from Shriek Show. Featuring two cool movies, first is SHADOW, the tale of a resurrected serial killer who's after a woman who's in prison. So, he's taking his undead army and attacking the prison to get her. Second is SHADOW: DEAD RIOT, which has the serial killer returning and, well, rioting, I guess! It should make for a very fun, b movie double feature.
Comic Book and horror geeks will be fighting in lines today, all to get their hands on the BLADE COLLECTION from New Line Home Video, this boxed set features the first three Blade movies, Blade, Blade 2, Blade Trinity and, the first TV movie, Blade: House Of Chthlon. Fans of the day walker will be pleased, indeed.
MPI Home Video is bringing us a NIGHTMARE this week. When a film student has a one night stand with his lead actress, they find a camera pointed at the bed the next morning. But, there's no sex tape in the camera, instead it's a snuff film with the actress and director doing the killing! Since they have no memory of the murder, they now have to figure out what happened last night, and discover whether or not they're both insane killers. This is why I never tape my murders; you always become hypercritical of your own work.
First Look Pictures gives us TRAUMA today, the story of a man who's been in a terrible car accident. When he awakens from his coma, he discovers that his wife is dead and his life is changed forever. As he begins to rebuild his life, he gets a new home, a new job and even meets a new woman, but when he begins seeing his dead wife, he can't decide whether he's seeing ghosts or losing his mind. My guess is that even after death, wives don't like you dating...at least, that's what my wife has told me.
A&E Home Video just keeps making horror real, this time by releasing the HAUNTED HISTORIES COLLECTION MEGASET. With 20 DVDs in one box, this will take you to the most haunted places around the U.S.A., from millennia old Halloween traditions to Savannah, Georgia, to the shores of Lake Michigan, no place is too remote for the History channel's team to dig into real life scares!
FALLEN ANGELS from Vivendi Entertainment is the story of a turn of the century reformatory that's about to be demolished. Until the skeletal remains of 7 children are discovered in a sub-basement. Now, as the CSI team begins investigating, they accidentally unleash 7 demons, each responsible for a specific deadly sin! Seven demons, seven deadly sins and, I'm assuming, seven grisly ways to die! Sounds like science doesn't triumph this time.
Travelers will be interesting in Cinema Epoch's NO THROUGH ROAD today. When a photographer is spending a quiet evening at home, it's all shattered by a woman who arrived desperate and afraid for her life. Now, our photographer friend is forced to battle for his guest survival...and his own. This is just another reason that I always discourage house guests. I don't have the will to battle for my own survival, let alone someone else's!
Fans of classic sci-fi will be pleased with Alpha Home Entertainment today, as they give us a cool GRINDHOUSE DOUBLE FEATURE, with two cool movies about Venus. First is IT CAME TO CONQUER THE WORLD, about a disgruntled scientist who guides aliens to Earth, not knowing that they won't like him either! Second is ZONTAR: THE THING FROM VENUS, about Zontar, a seemingly friendly Venusian who seems to want to help mankind, but probably has other ideas...like enslaving us all with mind control devices! Enslaving all with mind control devices, I thought that was Microsoft's idea?!?!
Halo 8 will have us IN A SPIRAL STATE today, four men and four women find their lives in Los Angeles turned upside down. Little do they know that their problems are all apparently starting inside the mind of a screenwriter! And he doesn't know that his characters have come to life. As the mystery unfolds, it all related to quantum mechanics, our own spiral galaxy and the struggle for human existence. Once you introduce quantum mechanics into a plot, you lose me. I barely grasp algebra, so quantum anything makes me very afraid!
Finally, Redemption USA wants to introduce us all to DRACULA'S DAUGHTER. A professor and his protege are tracking Drac's descendants through a strange world. When a circus dwarf, who's in love with one of these strange creatures, leads them to a mansion that's the home of an order of nuns, they don't know that the nuns are guarding a woman who is still betrothed to Dracula. When the young bride-to-be escapes from the mansion, she leads the entire cast on a chase that includes a baby-eating ogre and a wolf-woman, among other oddities! This sounds weird enough to be enjoyable!
Well, that should get you through the week, and remember, next week will be the first Tuesday in October, so I expect to start getting my Halloween gifts from everyone, and remember, it's never too early to send your favorite columnist a six pack of Pumpkin beer to celebrate All Hallow's Eve! And if you don't, you never know, there might be a curse placed on you, one that will have all your Halloween treats turn into caramel apples or pennies! Until next week, remember I'm always begging for indie movie fun over at Rogue Cinema.com and I'll be hiding my treats from prying eyes over at Bad Movie Guy.com any time you want to try to find them. And, let's all get into our costumes and meet back here next week for some more Tuesday Terrors On DVD.
