DVD Review: BEYOND THE DUNWICH HORROR
Scorpio Film Releasing DVD, 2008 dir Richard Griffin

Richard Griffin and Scorpio Film Releasing, the low budget, b-movie making gurus from New England responsible for classics like FEEDING THE MASSES (2004), RAVING MANIACS (2005), CREATURE FROM THE HILLBILLY LAGOON (2005), and PRETTY DEAD THINGS (2006), bring us their take on H.P. Lovecraft with BEYOND THE DUNWICH HORROR, a feature done in the style of '70s drive-in horror and classic giallos.

A modern retelling of the old Lovecraft story, Andrew (Jason McCormick) is found washed up on shore in the New England town of Dunwich. His brother Kenny (Michael Reed) goes searching for him and finds out that they admitted him to a psychiatric hospital. Kenny then seeks the help of an investigative reporter named Marsha (Ruth Sullivan) who is trying to find the truth behind various bizarre occurrences and murders that have been going on in the town. As events unfold, they come across a sinister plot involving Andrew and his girlfriend Nikki (Sarah Nicklin) and her friend Otto (Carlos Brum). Young man Upton Armitage (Jeff Dylan Graham) gets involved in trying to help Kenny rescue his brother from the dark forces that have taken him into their circle. A grisly series of events ensue involving the occult and satanic rituals culminating in a tense climax involving a battle between good and evil.

BEYOND THE DUNWICH HORROR is one of Richard Griffin and Scorpio's best films. It features some fine acting and faithfully maintains a macabre style true to Lovecraft's original visions. There is a good amount of blood and gore as well (including many eye gougings). Jeff Dylan Graham turns in a delightful performance as Upton Armitage and legendary horror and cult star Lynn Lowry (from I DRINK YOUR BLOOD (1970), THE CRAZIES (1973), SHIVERS (1975), etc.) is featured in a cameo as well.

The Scorpio DVD of DUNWICH presents the movie in widescreen and extras include an audio commentary, photo gallery, and trailer.

Fans of Lovecraft and low budget horror will find much to enjoy with Griffin's adaptation. The acting, effects and atmosphere are very good and Lynn Lowry's cameo is a welcomed touch that her fans should enjoy. Order this at www.scorpiofilmreleasing.net.
