Mario's Indie Horror Gallery: WELCOME TO DEER CREEK
November 12, 2009
by Mario Dominick
More than likely, this will be Mario's last installment of MARIO'S INDIE HORROR GALLERY for Fear ZSone. I have loved this column! No one alive possesses more knowledge about obscure, micro-budget horror fare than Mario, and I love running these reviews because they show that there is so much more to horror than whatever crap is showing at the multiplex. Fear not, like Nicholas Kaufmann, Lisa Morton, L.L. Soares and Michael Arruda, Mario will continue the good fight at another site, Horror Yearbook. The spirit of Fear Zone lives on!
WELCOME TO DEER CREEK (2009 dir Jim Roberts)
Blind Sight Productions DVD
On a sunny day in a small Ohio town, the town's mayor is out driving in his truck with a hooker along for the ride. Losing concentration on the road while the hooker is trying to fool around with him, the mayor accidentally runs down a small child who runs out into the road. The mayor flees the scene leaving the kid's mother to discover the bloodied body of her young son. A year later after the mayor is found not guilty in the hit-and-run case, the boy's mom commits suicide and the boy's father is left hungry for vengeance. The dad sprays some corn crops with a harmful chemical to get back at the town, which stood behind the mayor to prove he was innocent. The corn is later used in the town barbeque where several unsuspecting townsfolk show up. Side effects soon occur as a result of the chemical the dad used on the corn and the townsfolk soon develop a craving for human flesh. The town is soon consumed in a bloodbath as zombies wreak havoc and several survivors (including director Jim Roberts) fight to survive along with the vengeful dad, whose plan for payback turned out to be more than he bargained for. The survivors use everything at their disposal as they arm themselves with chainsaws, firearms, explosive devices, flammable materials, etc. It's a non-stop orgy of gore with gut munching, flesh ripping, chainsaw disembowelments, dismemberments, immolation, and much more.
WELCOME TO DEER CREEK is a fun micro budget gorefest from Jim Roberts of Blind Sight Productions, a young up-and-coming Ohio filmmaker who, with this movie, shows he is talented and competent with using limited resources to produce an independent horror flick with a great storyline and quality make-up effects. WELCOME TO DEER CREEK is a very entertaining film with some good gore and action and one that delivers characters with depth.
The current DVD of WELCOME TO DEER CREEK from Jim and Blind Sight is a preview copy in DVD-R format that contains some extras including a blooper reel, production stills gallery, and trailers including a fake Christmas horror movie trailer.
The movie is soon to be released on DVD by R Squared Films. In the meantime, you can contact Jim via MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/408941477 to inquire about purchasing the pre-release DVD-R edition.
