Trailer: THE DESCENT 2
February 16, 2009
by Greg Lamberson
I thought director Neil Marshall's 2005 original THE DESCENT was pretty cool: fun, if overrated, more intense in the claustrophobic first half hour than when the neat monsters appeared, but marred by a formulaic opening and a didtributor-tampered ending. Still, smarter than most contemporary monster flicks and free of lame horror "humor."
The trailer for the inevitable sequel is now live. The film abandons the women-in-peril premise in favor of a logical rescue effort, but the idea of Shauna Macdonald's Sarah character returning to those caves with the macho men - when she's freshly traumatized - is not only ridiculous but completely negates the film's "real" ending, which was seen everywhere but in the U.S.
I'm of the opinion that unnecessary sequels to decent horror films do more to negate the original films' impact than unnecessary remakes do.

1. I thought the first part was awesome! One of the scariest flicks I've seen so far and one of the best horror films of the new millenium. Not hyped or overrated at all in my opinion... I saw it in cinema and had a helluva time, not only cause the movie itself was very good but also cause there were three chicks sitting two rows behind me who were literally screaming their lungs out at every shock moment or gore scene in the movie. It was hilarious, like a scene from a bad movie. ;) I'm surely giving the sequel a try, too, though I agree with you that it seems rather unnecessary. I think the story was pretty much told with the first part and I don't think there's much left that a sequel could add to it. I also think that a lot of the surprise factor of the first part will be gone, cause now we already know what lurks in those caves, etc. But who knows, it might still be a pretty entertaining flick... I don't expect it to be as good as the first part but I surely gonna rent the DVD anyway or watch it on the big screen (if it'll be shown in cinemas over here).

2. I'm tiired of horror films, thrillers, and action films that open with the main character suffering some sort of trauma that he'll have to overcome to take down the Big Bad at the end. It's really contrived and predictable, and I thought it was really obvious in THE DESCENT. I enjoyed the film, but the phoney ending over here really hurt it.

3. I don't mind the way they kicked off the film. Sure, it wasn't exactly original, but then again the real fun didn't start before they entered the cave anyway... from that point on the movie was nothing but awesome in my opinion. I even liked the creepers. They added some nice shock value to the already scary-as-hell claustrophobic feel of the film. I heard about the crappy, erm happy ending of the US version. I would have hated it, too, but thanks god they didn't use it in the version I saw in cinema. My DVD got the real ending as well. So for me there's nothing to complain at all about the way the film ends...

4. Except that the new film begins where the American cut ended, with the woman escaping!

5. That's pretty stupid. One thing I really liked about "The Descent" was the fact that it didn't have a stereotypical happy ending but rather left the viewer with a very bleak, unsatisfied feeling... sometimes it seems to me as if you know in at least 8 out of 10 horror films whether a girl will survive or not right after you've seen her first scene. That kills of a lot of the tension and suspense. So it's always a positive surprise for me if a horror flick makes an exception to that pattern and fools the audience with an unexpected ending... and that's exactly what the European version of "The Descent" did. But, of course, they had to change it, cause no survivors = no sequel = no cash... oh well... ;)

6. The trailer I linked is now gone, one of the drawbacks of posting You Tuibe trailers. You can watch the less interesting teaser in our trailers section.
