Sign This Petition and Walk Like an Egyptian!
May 08, 2008
by Greg Lamberson
Is it possible for you to think of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein without picturing Boris Karloff as the monster? Even with one hundred million dollars at his disposal, was Stephen Sommers able to make Arnold Vasloo as memorable as Karloff's Mummy? Does Lon Chaney, Jr.s "enhanced" visage come to mind when you hear "Wolf Man"? While many actors, writers and directors contributed to the classic films that have come to be known as the Universal Monsters, one man contributed to nearly all of them.
After Lon Chaney, Sr., "The Man of 1,000 Faces," Jack Pierce (1889 - 1968) is probably more responsible for creating classic cinema creature designs than any other man in history. A sampling of Pierce's credits include DRACULA, FRANKENSTEIN, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE MUMMY, THE OLD DARK HOSE, WHITE ZOMBIE, MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE, WEREWOLF OF LONDON, THE WOLF MAN and many others. He was a genius who had an incredible impact on film history and American pop culture.
Sign this petition to award this talented artist a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. It's great that those who followed in his footsteps, like Dick Smith, Rick BAker and Rob Bottin, have won Oscars for special make-up effect, but Pierce never had that honor. You can help give him this one. To date, over 2,200 people have signed the petition.
