DVD Review: PAJAMA PARTY MASSACRE
June 16, 2008
by Mario Dominick
YOU'RE NEXT 3: PAJAMA PARTY MASSACRE (2007 dir Jason Stephenson)
NFTS Productions DVD
From Not For The Squeamish Productions, the indie filmmakers and horror buffs from Minnesota who gave us OFF THE BEATEN PATH (2004) and DOOMED TO CONSUME (2006), comes a short slasher spoof aimed at showing how NFTS has progressed with its efforts from short films to feature length projects.
A masked psycho (Joe Knetter) takes a shower, goes into a garage and puts together a nasty-looking homemade axe (it's a buzz saw blade attached to a standard axe handle). A couple of ice cream eating babes (Scarlet Salem and Elske McCain) having a slumber party end up being first on the killer's list of victims. I think you all know how this plays out. The girls goof around, take baths, snort cocaine, bicker, etc. and eventually the night ends in a bloodbath.
YOU'RE NEXT 3: PAJAMA PARTY MASSACRE turns out to be a wonderfully cheesy and fun 25-minute slasher tribute. It delivers in humor, blood, guts, and T&A and Joe Knetter as the killer wears an incredibly cheesy mask. The circular saw ax used in the film was a very creative invention and choice of weapon for a slasher and it's very evident throughout the film that NFTS are truly loyal '80s slasher fans. Overall it was a nice look at how NFTS has progressed over the years and I look forward to seeing it made into a feature length picture.
NFTS's DVD of YOU'RE NEXT 3 contains numerous extras to keep you busy including two audio commentaries: one with director Jason Stephenson and the other with Joe Knetter and Scarlet Salem, behind-the-scenes footage, outtakes, interviews with Stephenson, Knetter, Salem, and producer Jon Warner, the original YOU'RE NEXT 1 and 2 short films from Stephenson and Co., and a funny featurette called "Balls, Boobs, and Blood" which provides behind-the-scenes looks at the filming of Knetter's scene where he gets kicked in the nads, the scene where the girls smear ice cream on their boobs, and the scene where blood is splattered all over the room as the killer hacks up one of his victims. Also included is an extensive stills gallery featuring production photos and promotional art, footage of cast and crew Q&A sessions at the movie's premieres at the Crypticon Horror Convention and the UWRF Horror Fest, and trailers for YOU'RE NEXT 3 and other NFTS flicks.
If you're a fan of indie horror and you have $20 to spare, you can't go wrong with this jam-packed release of YOU'RE NEXT 3 from NFTS. Be sure to check out OFF THE BEATEN PATH and DOOMED TO CONSUME if you haven't already, both excellent micro budget efforts. Visit NFTS at www.nftsproductions.com
