Last Rites (Updated)
When I was hired to create and launch Fear Zone, I conceived it as a monthly magazine that would be doled out in daily doses. That being the case, you now "hold in your hands" what amounts to the Zone's final issue.

Traffic for this site remains exceptionally high (and we've shown a 40% increase over the last 3 months) and I know editors at other sites who would kill for our numbers. But this is a commercial venture, and advertising revenue on the web has dried up during the recession, and there's no stimulus money for horror websites...

I'll continue to post new content from our remaining contributors, who have loyally supported FZ to the end, through November. THE SITE WILL REMAIN LIVE, WITH ALL CONTENT ARCHIVED, FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. At the home office, there is hope that we can re-launch when the market improves.

I want to thank Charles Sommer, who owns the site, for hiring me in the first place (over 700 other applicants), and for sticking with it for so long; I would have written this editorial six months ago if he didn't share my enthusiasm for what we've accomplished here. I also want to thank all of the contributors - too numerous to mention - who have made this site what it is - one of the smartest and best written horror entertainment sites on the web. And I especially want to thank you readers; there are a lot of you out there.

I'm proud of Fear Zone. This has been the best job I've ever had. It's been a great pleasure to have worked with so many talented people, and to have turned the spotlight on so many authors and filmmakers and their works - and to have had such a heavily frequented site on which to promote my own work. It was exciting to post our Video Exclusive interviews and author readings (which drew 3,000 - 5,000 viewers!); to post excerpts from novels; to serialize Benjamin Kane's SURGEON DELTA and especially Lee Thomas's novel DAMAGE. And I loved our ecclectic mix, which ranged from reviews of the finest contemporary horror literature to the most obscure indie films.

Thanks for reading and please stick around - there's still more to come. Let's make November a real horror party!

Best,
Greg Lamberson

1. Fear Zone has been a terrific site, and the contributors have been excellent. You did a great job, Greg, and you should be proud of what you've accomplished. It's really sad that such a great site is going away.

2. Thanks, L.L. Time to find other work now. As great as FZ has been, there's the down side, too: trying to help small press publishers to help themselves is like pulling fangs; they'd rather post a blog or on Shocklines, and reach 300 people, then send a press release here and reach 10,000. And then there's the author whose book I announced and excerpted, and we ran an interview with him and a review of his book, AND HE NEVER EVEN MENTIONED ANY OF THEM ON HIS DAMNED BLOG! And the crook who forged some FZ checks and possibly hastened our demise. And the contributor who flipped out over a bounced $20 check and cut me off after a two-year professional relationship and friendship. And the editors of two other websites (I'd never call them rivals, we're friends) who got bent out of shape when I listed the traffic rankings of horror websites, because it showed just how much traffic FZ generates and how little theirs do in comparison. Oh, and the King Louie of them all: when Joe Mauceri, who runs Fearsmag, called me after our launch and threatened to sue us because we used "fear" in our title!!! I've seldom been more pleased about our numbers than when we left Fearsmag in the dust. Of course, they're still around.... But these were all minor blips during a great run.

3. Damn! FearZone, how will I get by without you! I'm gonna miss this site. My morning websurf just wont be the same. Thanks, Greg - awesome job. In a shpw of solidarity, I'll never write video game reviews for another site (unless they pay me gobs of money;-)

5. Is nothing stable anymore in this crazy new world? So many great reviews and articles. It's a shame it will go into the void. Too bad there can't be a giant anthology of the articles-- it's like destroying history, otherwise. =(

9. Damn, it's really sad to hear that Fearzone's days are almost counted... I always enjoyed reading the many different kinds of articles and I'm quite a bit proud that I could make at least a little contribution to the site by sending in some reviews, interviews and stuff... you did an AWESOME job, Greg, and Fearzone will be dearly missed.
