MANIAC ON THE LOOSE (2008 dir Steve Hudgins)
Big Biting Pig Productions DVD
A psychotic mental patient escapes from an institution. Fearing that this escape and breach of hospital security will threaten his reputation and career, a doctor orders one of his orderlies after the psycho. Soon afterwards a girl traveling through town to meet up with her date whom she met online shows up at the guy's house where she is soon greeted by somebody who may or may not be her date. The man slowly turns hostile towards her and his psychotic tendencies soon reveal themselves. Unsuccessfully fighting to escape his wrath, the girl ends up tied up to a bed with another man who in flashbacks is shown as the resident of the household and is greeted by the maniac who greeted the girl earlier. The man is knocked unconscious in the flashback and therefore is presently tied up to the bed next to the girl. Soon it turns out that the maniac who has tied them up and is proceeding to torture them with implements from a toolbox is the orderly ordered by the mental hospital doctor to go after the escaped psycho.
Then things take unexpected turns revealing that the bound and gagged man tied up with the girl is not the person whom he appears to be leading to the orderly ending up on the receiving end of his homicidal methods and then a chain of events occurs that end with each character in the story becoming their own "maniac on the loose" making the movie seem more like "Maniacs on the Loose" with multiple maniacs. New twists pop up with flashback on top of flashback as the story takes you down its bloody path.
MANIAC ON THE LOOSE is one of the most surprising, inventive, and original indie horror efforts as of recently and it presents several unexpected twists with almost every character being revealed as having a dark side that isn't present at firsthand. It contains a few decent gore gags and a brutal torture scene that's very fitting and pays tribute to the murder/torture subgenre in a most appropriate manner. The creative twists, dark humor, and twisted ending make the movie a fun low budget slasher tribute with the right amount of blood and psychos for a night of fun and entertainment for the family.
Big Biting Pig Productions' DVD of MANIAC ON THE LOOSE contains some deleted and extended scenes as extras as well as a blooper reel and trailers.
