Mario's Indie Horror Gallery: MASKHEAD
MASKHEAD (2009 dir Scott Swan and Fred Vogel)

Toe Tag Pictures DVD

After their return to "spreading the sickness" this year with MURDER COLLECTION VOL. 1, Pittsburgh's Toe Tag Pictures brings us another venture into the macabre with "Masters of Horror" and "Fear Itself" writer Scott Swan teaming up with Fred Vogel for MASKHEAD.

MASKHEAD tells the story of Syl and Maddie (Shelby Vogel and Danielle Inks), two girls who produce fetish videos and recruit actors for parts in their movies along with the help of a cowboy (Daniel V. Klein). The cowboy asks a girl at a bar if she's ever heard of a series called "Maskhead." Actors show up to audition for Syl and Maddie. (S&M, get it?) The actors are asked during the interviews if they're willing to perform the most sickening, vile, and depraved sex acts. Actors who are willing to comply with the demands of Syl and Maddie are rewarded with parts while those who resist are condemned to the wrath of "Maskhead," a disfigured, burned, and bandaged hulking psycho who wears a sharp, metal wired headgear and tortures and kills the "bad apples" in various brutal, gory, and horrendous ways. Neck breaking, crotch stapling, arm breaking, stabbing, sawing, head bashing, among other things, are what ensue.

MASKHEAD is one of Toe Tag's best movies yet with excellent performances by Vogel, Inks, Klein and Mike Witherel who plays "Maskhead." Jerami Cruise's gore effects are excellent as always, the atmosphere and lighting is very effective, and Scott Swan's script and directing combined with Fred Vogel and Toe Tag's macabre, brutal style of filmmaking make the film a very memorable experience for horror fans. The best elements of a slasher film and a documentary on S&M moviemaking are all put to good use to make MASKHEAD a sick, brutal gorefest that delivers. The ending features one of the most downright nasty, vicious and graphic torture sequences one could ever conceive of. It's another job well done by Toe Tag.

Toe Tag's DVD of MASKHEAD contains a director's commentary with Scott Swan and Fred Vogel, a behind-the-scenes "Maskhead" make-up featurette with optional commentary by make-up effects artist Jerami Cruise, a short "Cowboy's Whistling" featurette on the cowboy character's whistling, a blooper reel, the movie's trailer, and a photo gallery.

2. I actually just read a good review of this on Aint it Cool News, too - of course, the writer-director of MASKHEAD is also the writing partner of one of the AICN veteran writers.
