Brian the Bad Movie Guy: Horror DVDs for October 20th
October 20, 2009
by Brian Morton
It's October 20th and All Hallow's Eve moves every closer! Can you feel it, the darkness moving closer, the evil beginning to waken, the dumb-ass kids getting ready to egg your house? I can feel it! Well, let's take our mind off the egg cleaning that we'll be doing on November 1st and see what hits horror DVD today, shall we?
First up, from Sony Pictures is BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE, a live action version of the cult anime series. Saya is a half-human, half-vampire warrior who hunts vampires. When she's dispatched to an American military base, soon she'll face the deadliest vampire of her career. This was critically acclaimed when it hit theatres...but let's not hold that against it, I heard it was a great kung-fu/horror flick!
You say you want your anime actually animated? Well, Sony Pictures isn't going to let you down. They're also putting BLOOD+ PART 2 on shelves today too. This is a continuation of Saya's tale, in the original anime version. So, fans of vampires, anime, and horror, rejoice, it's all here in one DVD!
Now, say you're looking for something a bit more classic. Well, Sony Pictures is still in the game with THE WILLIAM CASTLE COLLECTION. If you don't know who Castle was, then shame on you! Castle was 'the poor man's Hitchcock' and created some classic B horror movies, in this package you'll get 8 of his best: 13 FRIGHTENED GIRLS; 13 GHOSTS; HOMICIDAL; STRAIT-JACKET; THE OLD DARK HOUSE; MR. SARDONICUS; THE TINGLER and ZOTZ! Each has its own charm and the package also includes SPINE TINGLER! THE WILLIAM CASTLE STORY a doc about the man himself. This is a must have for any fans of Castle or his movies!
Cheezy Flix Entertainment is testing us today by sending us to SATAN'S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS! A 1972 TV movie starring Cheryl Ladd (of Charlie's Angels fame) as a young woman who's investigating her sister's suicide at a private school for girls. Soon she'll discover that the school has been infiltrated by a satanic cult! Oh, Satan, you're always trying to teach the young girls...you old pervert!
The Asylum brings us 100 FEET today, the tale of a woman who's been let out of prison early after being sentenced for killing her violent cop husband in self defense. The only problem is that she's forced to wear an ankle bracelet and isn't allowed to be more than 100 feet from her home. And, that's only a problem because her husband is still in there, only he's now a really angry ghost, looking for revenge! This is exactly what's wrong with the penal system...too many vengeful ghosts!
Grimoire asks us to RAVAGE THE SCREAM QUEEN today. No, they're not inciting us to molest Debbie Rochon! It's a tale of a serial killer who lures women to his place by 'casting' them in 'movies'. The only problem is that these are snuff films! This satire of exploitation movies is said to contain all the best elements of exploitation...so look forward to some gore, some sleaze and a ton of T&A!
In BLOOD TIES from Triumphant Entertainment, a group of college students have written a paper with their theory of some unsolved murders on their campus from 20 years before. The problem lies in that their theory is a bit too close to reality and they begin disappearing one by one. Does that last one alive get the grade?
Cheezy Flix Entertainment is also delivering UNINVITED today. This story of a group of young people who are invited on a cruise by a gangster, only to find that a mutant cat has escaped a test lab and is hiding on board! I guess we'll find out if kids have 9 lives too!
In 'P' from Tartan Video a young girl is taught magic by her grandmother in rural Thailand. Now, she's been lured to Bangkok to work in a go-go bar and she's losing control of her magic. Who wants to bet that if you tuck a dollar into her g-string, you're liable to draw back a stump?
Back in the classic mode, Film Chest is releasing THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE today, the classic, 'chick's head in a dish' movie is a classic that we all love, and it's a great way to bring the young people into the horror fold!
In MOONCHILD from Thunder Island, an artist is spending the night is a mysterious inn. The inn is also full of weird people, one of whom is the innkeeper's hot daughter, but, what the artist isn't aware of is that he's wandered into a strange spiritual void and that everyone in the inn is after his soul! I've heard of steep hotel prices, but this seems extreme!
R Squared Films wants us to meet THE WHISTLER today. When a band of thugs kills a lumberjack and his one true love, they think everything is over. But, one year later, an axe-wielding vigilante begins picking off the gang one by one. Has the lumberjack returned from the grave? Or is someone else killing the gang? Let's be honest, as long as the bad guys get dead, who cares who's doing it?
Echo Bridge Home Entertainment also has someone for us to meet today, it's the LAST OF THE LIVING. After a virus turns everyone on the planet into zombies, only 3 slackers survive, and now they've met a hot chick who may just have the cure for the zombie virus. Will the three slackers finally decide to do something other than lay around in their underwear all day? I guess we'll have to grab a copy of this and enjoy it...lying around in our underwear!
Synergy Entertainment is giving us a bit more bang for our buck today with two movies. First is TEENAGE ZOMBIES from 1959, which I'm sure is about some wacky teenagers who have to battle some zombies. The second is WHITE ZOMBIE from 1932, starring Bela Lugosi as a man who can turn people into mindless zombies. Both are classics and both of these editions come with a T Shirt that you can wear while you watch. What a great way to let the neighborhood know, 'hey, this is the movie I just watched'.
FREAKY FARON from Anthem Pictures is the tale of a lovely 11 year old girl...who tried to kill the local weatherman (who hasn't wanted to do that?!). Now, its 5 years later and she's been let out of the mental institution, but it seems that her dark past is returning to haunt her. Will the weatherman be safe? Are any of us safe from the weatherman? We'll have to grab a copy to find out for sure.
And finally, Cheezy Flix Entertainment is giving us the 'classic' 1971 movie, ISLE OF THE SNAKE PEOPLE today. When a new police chief arrives on a small island, it's soon apparent that the island is overrun with people who worship an evil priest. And, when the local plantation owner's niece is taken hostage by the cult, it's up to the sheriff and the land baron to get her back before she can be the cult latest human sacrifice. This is just another reason not to visit small remote islands, they're always teeming with weirdoes!
Well, that should get your through the week, and remember, next week is Halloween week, so you should stock up on candy and treats, because if you show up here next week without any, I'm liable to find you and egg your house early! And remember, you can always find me begging for indie movies over at Rogue Cinema.com and, then you know that I'll be loosening my belt and relaxing over at Bad Movie Guy.com. And, I'll be right back here, chocolate smeared on my face, to see what hits horror DVD next week!
