EXCLUSIVE: The Dirt on Romero's New Zombie Opus!
November 07, 2008
by Greg Lamberson
Let's get this out of the way: I consider Romero's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and DAWN OF THE DEAD to be two of the greatest horror films ever made; I learned to love DAY OF THE DEAD; I didn't hate Savini's remake of NIGHT; I did hate Zach Snyder's remake of DAWN; RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD is dandy; John Russo is my walking nightmare and should not be allowed anywhere near a zombie flick; I thought LAND OF THE DEAD was dull, unimaginative, and pointless--the BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES of the series; and because I therefore had the lwoest of expectations, I didn't mind DIARY OF THE DEAD even though I thought it had little to offer.
Not only do I think the zombie genre is tired, I think Romero and his zombie films are tired. Stick a fork in them, they're done. I really don't need to see any more of this.
But I have good news about George's new zombie flick!
Just the facts, ma'am:
The film is currently shooting in Toronto.
Forget the rumors that the film is called ISLAND OF THE DEAD; it has no title yet.
Also forget Romero's own comments that this is a sequel to DIARY, with the runaway bride as the central character. Totally untrue.
The new film is a zombie western. Why a western? Because Romero wants to make all kinds of films, and if he has to stick zombies in them, so be it.
The film is much bigger than DIARY--"What DAWN was compared to NIGHT," according to my source, who also said that Romero looked great: energetic, upbeat and happy.
There you have it: no speculation, but hard NEWS!

1. Sounds pretty cool. I've still not seen "Diary Of The Dead", but I've enjoyed "Land Of The Dead" quite a bit and even bought the special edition DVD. And not to forget Romoero's first three zombie epics are all freakin' topnotch. In fact I've just been watching "Day Of The Dead" a couple of days ago... lookin' forward to Romero's new one!!

2. That's great news! The Living Dead series is what got me hooked on horror. Can't wait to hear more news on this one.
Thanks for the heads up,
Ron
