What's Up With THE TWILIGHT SAGA, Anyway?

What's Up With THE TWILIGHT SAGA, Anyway?
This is not a diatribe against Stephenie Meyers's TWILIGHT Saga. I'm on record as believing that anything that gets young people to read, and anything that might steer them towards horror fiction, cannot be all bad. The teenage girls who swoon over Robert Pattinson are no more ridiculous than housewives who found DARK SHADOWS' Barnabas Collins irresistable, or goths who fantasized over Anne Rice's Lestat. Every generation expresses their vampire lust, and Meyers simply tapped into a younger vein than most other creators have.

No, I'm talking aboutt he film series. First Summit Entertainment replaced TWILIGHT director Catherine Hardwicke with Chris Weitz on THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON because Hardwicke wanted a little more time and money to make a better movie. Then producers threatened to oust werewolf boy Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black becuase he didn't look bulky enough for his enlarged role in the sequel; the poor kid had to bust his ass to "make weight," but kudos to him, he managed to keep the role. Good on you, Taylor. Then the filmmakers switched locales from Oregon to (cheaper) Vancouver. And now, for THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE - which hasn't even started filming yet! - they've replaced Rachelle Lefevre with Bryce Dallas Howard in the role of vampire vixen Victoria over a 10-day schedule conflict!

What gives with all of this chaos? TWILIGHT and the novels that inspired it has spawned a legion of bloodthirsty fans. Fans like continuity and consistency. Why is the production company so disrespectful of these fans? Obviously, the executives believe squealing teenage girls won't care that actors and locations have changed, and maybe some of them won't, but I bet plenty will. I find it very cynical that these suits want viewers' cash but won't spend additional money, or make a few accomodations for continuing cast members, to give the fans what they really want.

1. No offense to Ms. Lefevre (I took my daughter to see this in the theaters and frankly, I can't really remember any of the Cullen vamps except for Edward and his doctor dad with the weird platinum blonde hair), but Ms. Howard is a pretty great actress with a little more star power behind her name. Seems to me like those money grubbing suits saw an opportunity to oust the lesser known actress (via silly legalities) for some Name talent. Anyone out there hear anymore about Bayona (THE ORPHANAGE) directing the third movie? There were rumors, but I think they've fizzled. Since I'm in it for the long haul (I think - although my daughter will be less interested in me taking her than going with her friends by the time the third movie comes out - she's at that age) I'm hoping they keep getting interesting directors...

2. I thought Bryce Howard was horrible in SPIDER-MAN 3 and TERMINATOR: SALVATION.

3. Now that I think about it, I only saw her (missed T4 and Spidey3) in Shamalamdingdong's THE VILLAGE. Maybe I'm giving her too much credit, but I thought she played blind convincingly...(maybe the rest of the movie sucked so bad she came off as better than she is?). It's good to see the return of comments, huh? Too many posts go to their grave with 0 remarks!

5. Twilight is a series of four vampire-based fantasy/romance novels by the American author Stephenie Meyer. It follows the life of Isabella "Bella" Swan, a teenager who moves to Forks, Washington, and finds her life radically changed when she falls in love with a vampire named Edward Cullen. The series is told primarily from Bella's point of view, with the epilogue of Eclipse and a portion of Breaking Dawn being told from the viewpoint of character Jacob Black. Midnight Sun, if published, will be a retelling of the first book, Twilight, from Edward Cullen's point of view. Thanks Sofia Wilson Project Manager http://www.recoverybull.com
