Most horror readers know how often the genre is split into subgenres, and sometimes becomes a mishmash with other genres. Morgan James has blended erotica, romance and horror to produce quality e-books for the romance market. Her novel Haunted Seduction was released by Ravenous Romance in December, and is available for download in both e-book and audio book format.
Ravenous Romance, a company that launched in December 2008, has produced e-books that are compatible with Amazon's Kindle, the Sony Reader, and just about any gadget you might carry. While it might seem that Morgan's work focuses on the women's market, Ravenous does have a large male demographic.

Jeremy C. Shipp's first short story collection is called Sheep and Wolves. It also made it onto the preliminary ballot for the Bram Stoker award for story collection (sadly, it didn't get onto the final ballot). I recently sat down with Jeremy and asked him some probing questions about his writing, and himself. The sheer intensity of this interview at times bordered on interrogation, but I promise that no water boarding was involved.
LL SOARES: Okay, let's start at the beginning. What made you want to become a writer? How early did you start writing?
JEREMY C. SHIPP: In the 4th grade, I had an assignment to write a fictional short story, and I ended up writing a not-so-short story about an ... (more…)

This installment of SCREAMING SPOTLIGHT is focused on writer Daniel G. Keohane. And this interview actually coincides nicely with the release of his first novel, SOLOMON'S GRAVE (published by Dragon Moon Press). I first met Dan at a convention back in 2000, and we became fast friends. Since that time we've collaborated on a short story called "Mermaids," which appeared in Cemetery Dance Magazine in Issue # 46 (October 2003) and we're currently finishing up work on a new novella. Aside from sometimes writing together, Dan and I are also currently the co-chairs of the NEW ENGLAND HORROR WRITERS.
In celebration of his new novel, Dan and I sat down and had a little chat.

THE STRAIN
On June 2nd, HarperCollins will publish THE STRAIN, the first chapter in a trilogy of vampire novels co-written by filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan. Here's the sccop on this hotly anticipated project.
Q&A with Academy Award(R)-winner Guillermo Del Toro and Hammett Prize-winner Chuck Hogan
Q: Guillermo, you've written screenplays and directed numerous movies, just to name a few of your many accomplishments. What motivated you to write a novel?
GDT: Well, it's a different challenge, but I've always written short stories and then in my film work when writing storylines for movies, the storyline is a slightly "freer" form than screenplay writing. I have published some of my ... (more…)

Poetry. Short stories. Novels. Nonfiction books. Separately and together, prolific collaboraters Michael McCarty and Mark McLaughlin have been exploring horror prose from nearly every conceivable angle, including humor. This year, two of their collaborations earned Bram Stoker Award nominations: Monster Behind the Wheel, for Superior Acievement in a First Novel, and Attack of the Two-Headed Poetry Monster for Superior Achievement in a Poetry Collection. Although they'v written, and continue to write, solo efforts, and have also collaborated with other writers, there's no denying that these two make a potent combination when they work in tandem, so it only made sense to conduct a ... Bram Stoker Award-nominated author Michael Louis Calvillo received positive reviews for his debut horror novel, I Will Rise, but I predict he's about to achieve a whole new level of acclaim with his second book, the cannibals-and-drug addicts novel As Fate Would Have It, now now available from Bad Moon Books. I read this original, thought provoking, and literary horror thriller several months ago, and it ranks at the top of my list for books published in 2010; it's funny and harrowing and not bound by genre conventions. You can read an exclusive excerpt from the novel here. Calvillo, who reviews video games for Fear Zone, has a lot more fiction on the way, but I'll let him tell you ... (more…)

I met Joe McKinney at BookExpo America in L.A. last year. He and Weston Ochse and I spent some time manning the Horror Writers Association's table there. Joe signed a copy of his zombie novel Dead City for me, and I started it in my hotel room that night. I was immediately drawn into the disaster that openes the novel and quickly sets the stage for a zombie epidemic. His story "Mr. Creator" in Magus Press' The Sound of Horror also impressed me. Joe has a dangerous profession: he's a homicide detective, a horror writer... and a father. He's also juggling mass market and small press projects; his new novel, Quarantined, just went on sale. Look for an excerpt from it on Fear Zone next ... (more…)
