POULTRYGEIST - NIGHT OF THE CHICKEN DEAD (Extended International Cut)
(USA, 2008, 103 Minutes)

Hey guys, I'm Arbie. At first glimpse I might look like some kinda dork with my goofy glasses, my pathetic breakdance moves and my ridiculous Yankees tattoo on the butt cheek, but once you've gotten to know me better, I'm actually quite a cool and funny guy... and, not to forget, I'm also the protagonist of a hilarious horror comedy cult film called POULTRYGEIST - NIGHT OF THE CHICKEN DEAD, which in my humble opinion is the best flick that the legendary TROMA studios have produced since their heyday in the 80s, when they brought us such classics as THE TOXIC AVENGER, CLASS OF NUKE 'EM HIGH and SURF NAZIS MUST DIE.

Yeah, you've heard right! With his latest splatter ... (more…)

Return to Crystal Lake... Again
Deluxe Edition DVD
Friday the 13th Part 4: The Final Chapter
Friday the 13th Part 5: A New Beginning
Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives

Paramount Home Video 2009

It is hard to keep a successful bogeyman down in Hollywood. The FRIDAY THE 13th franchise is one of the longest running and most successful horror series ever, that much is indisputable. A perennial fan favorite; the series has been virtually critic-proof, and has endured for over 2 decades.

Never one to rest on its laurels when there is a dollar to be made, Paramount has released yet another batch of special edition DVDs and the results are impressive. No real need to tell horror fans about the films really, as (aside from a very ... (more…)

DVD Zone: THE COLOUR FROM THE DARK
Directed by Ivan Zuccon (2008)

I am familiar enough with Ivan Zuccon's body of film work to have a solid frame of reference of his growth as a director, and specifically in his cinematic adaptations of HP Lovecraft's stories. The first effort I saw from Zuccon was 2003's THE SHUNNED HOUSE, which I felt did a very admirable job of creating a somber, surreal atmosphere despite the film's budgetary limitations. Zuccon is obviously a real fan of Lovecraft, and he understands that throwing money at the screen is not what it takes to bring The Old Gentleman from Providence's stories to life.

The same dark undercurrent of mood, and terror is present in Zucchon's current film, THE COLOUR FROM THE ... (more…)

DVD Zone: S. DARKO
S.DARKO
Directed by Chris Fischer
2009 / Fox

If we learned anything from the Richard Kelly's original film, DONNIE DARKO, it is that time travel is best served with an air of mystery (a dose of water and metal won't hurt either), and a decidedly vague ending. I can't help but think the creators of 2009's sequel to took that credo way too seriously. I don't think this film is a shameless rip-off, or a blatant attempt to cash in per se. But the storyline is so convoluted, and the characters so contrived, I just can't say the film was a completely enjoyable experience. I think the writers and the director really did try to deliver a thought provoking and worthy sequel, but S. DARKO fails in ... (more…)

DVD Zone: Another Face for Jason Voorhees
We may as well milk FRIDAY THE 13th for all it's worth--Paramount sure is!

The company with a majestic mountain and cloud cover for its logo has unveiled the cover for their DVD release of the Platinum Dunes remake of FRIDAY THE 13th.

When I saw the film at ascreening, one of my guests made a funny comment: "I loved that you usually only saw one eyueball through the hockey mask! In most of the original films you see both eyes through the mask, and then when the mask comes off you see that one eye is three inches lower than the other!"

True that. (more…)
